This workshop is being held on SATURDAY 25th APRIL 2025, 10am – 1pm


This 3 hour workshop is dedicated to exploring the traditional Japanese bookmaking technique known as "stab stitch". It is a technique used for binding loose sheets together, whilst adding a decorative element to the spine.


We will use the traditional 'yotsume toji' four-hole stitch, as well as other decorative variations, including hemp leaf and tortoise shell patterns. We will experiment with different stitch patterns and wrap-around covers, exploring how to balance form and function. We will make multiple blank books, but you may want to bring along drawings, photos or notes that you can bind together in the workshop. You will make at least 3 hand stitched books, some which will be soft-cover practice books, and one of which will be a hard-back cloth-covered book.
